Miyan Karkashi (Nigerian Sesame Leaf Soup)

Ingredients

  • ½ cup karkashi leaves , either fresh or dried and ground
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon fermented locust beans ( iru )
  • ¼ pound fish
  • 0.25 kg meat
  • ½ teaspoon potash
  • 1 seasoning cube

Directions

Grind the karkashi leaves to a paste.

Bring the water to boil in a pot, and stir in the fermented locust beans.

Add the fish and meat, and cook for 5–7 minutes.

Add the karkashi leaf paste along with the potash. Stir, and cook for 5 minutes.

Stir in the seasoning cube. Continue stirring with a whisk for 3 minutes until the mixture is smooth.

Serve the soup with tuwo masara, tuwo dawa, tuwo alkama, or tuwo shinkafa .
