PICKLED HERRING— Clean and soak salt herring over night in cold water. Drain and cover with following: Cup of water, cup of vinegar, few slices of lemon, teaspoon sugar, two onions sliced, tea- spoon mixed whole pickling spices, one bay leaf and one apple peeled and grated. Allow herring to remain in this pickle over night before using.
