One small cupful of butter, two cupfuls of sugar, three cupfuls of flour, one small cupful of milk, four eggs, one tea- spoonful of baking powder. Bake in jelly-cake pans ; when cold, spread with the following : Three tart apples, grated ; one cupful of white sugar, one egg, the grated rind and juice of one lemon ; boil a few moments ; let it stand to cool before spreading on the cake.
