Directions

1 tablespoonful of butter; 1 bay leaf; 1 tablespoonful of flour; y2 cupful of rich milk; Saltspoonful of pepper; y2 teaspoonful of salt; Pinch of soda.
Add to the strained tomatoes the onion, pinch of soda, mace, and bay leaf ; boil gently until reduced one-half. Rub together the flour and butter; add to the tomatoes; cook for a minute or two. Take from the fire and add the heated milk, salt, and pepper. Strain and serve.
