Americans are very ambitious of French names, and cafe au lait is being domesticated in their kitchens. Its French name sounds new to many, yet it is a very ancient method of preparing coffee. In bygone days my grandmother, and later my mother, when there was milk to spare, often made our coffee half milk, which the French call cafe au lait.
