One cup of sugar and a scant half -cup of water; let boil until it threads. Then take from the stove and have ready the white of an egg beaten to a stiff froth. Add the hot syrup gradually to the egg, stirring constantly until it thickens. Then add some chopped figs and spread between cake and on top.

The same filling is nice with English walnuts and raisins in- stead of the figs. Mrs. E. W. Matthews.
