Directions
1 cup sugar, \ cup butter (soft), 1 egg, \ cup sweet milk, 2 good tsp. baking powder, \\ cups flour, 2 sq. chocolate dissolved in \ cup boiling water. Put all in a mixing bowl and beat five minutes or longer. Mrs. Hugh Wakefield.
DEVILS FOOD (inexpensive and good.) 1 cup sugar, \ cup sour milk or cream (latter is best), 1 level tsp. soda, \ cup hot water, 1| sq. chocolate, 1J cups flour, 2 eggs, vanilla, pinch of salt. Put sugar, cream and soda together, dissolve chocolate in hot water. Save white of one egg for frosting. Beat the rest and add to cake mixture. Sift flour thoroughly and add. Frost with boiled frosting using remaining white of egg and one cup of sugar. Bake in a dripping pan in moderate oven.
