Boil 14 pound salt and 2 qts. vinegar together and pour over 1 ounce black pepper, 1 ounce yellow mustard seed, 1 ounce allspice. 1 saltspoon cayenne. When cold pour over cucumbers and small silver onions which have been washed and pared; put in fruit cans with a small piece of alum. If the vinegar is too strong the pickles will wither. 700 small cucumbers in quart jars will take about a gallon and a half of vinegar after it is prepared. Mrs. Osborn.
