Directions. — Peel the onions, and soak them for twenty minutes in hot water in which the soda is dissolved. Drain the water away, cut the onions in rings ; put the fat into the saucepan, and when it is quite hot, fry them a nice brown. Mix the flour evenly with a pint of the water, add it to the onions, and fly it brown. Pour, from a kettle, three pints of hot water into this, and bring it to the boil, stirring it often. Serve with toast cut into dice.
