Directions
Three gallons soft water, one gallon cider vinegar, two quarts salt. Wash your cucumbers and put them in this brine. When you wish to use them freshen them by soaking in cold water. Put them in a kettle, cover with w^eak vine- gar, put grape leaves over and scald until green. Then put the pickles and spices in jars and cover with oood strong cold vinegar. For one gallon of vinegar mix one cup white mustard seed, one ounce stick cinnamon, one teaspoonful whole cloves, two red peppers, a few small onions, one pint of sugar, one teaspoon of mace and a few pieces of horseradish. — Mrs. 2.
