Pare and chop a half dozen apples; grease a dish, cover the bottom half an inch deep with bread crumbs, add a lump of but- ter, then a layer of apples and sugar with a little nutmeg. Repeat this until the dish is full; then pour over the whole one teacup of cold water. Bake thirty minutes. No sauce is needed.
