Ingredients
- one cup of dark-brown sugar
- a pinch of cinnamon
- a cup of water
- cinnamon
- cloves
- allspice
Directions
Butter a large pudding dish. Arrange alternate layers of thinly-sliced sour apples and bread crumbs; season each layer with a generous sprinkling of gran- ulated sugar, bits of butter, a pinch of cinnamon, cloves, and allspice. Cover the top with plenty of crumbs and dot bits of butter here and there. Make a syrup of one cup of dark-brown sugar and half a cup of water; pour this around the sides of the dish, and not over the crumbs. Bake in a moderate oven for forty-five minutes. Serve with a sweet sauce, or sweet cream if much sweetness is not liked.
