Directions

Mix together one and a half pounds of flour, quarter of a pound of sugar, one ounce of ground ginger, one teaspoonful of ground clove, nutmeg, mace, or cinnamon to taste. Add one level tea- spoonful of baking soda (carbonate of soda). Now rub into these half a pound of. butter or lard. Mix to a paste stiff enough to be able to be handled about one pint of good molasses. Roll out pretty thin. Cut with a small round cutter. Bake in a pretty quick oven.
